An Elegant Slice of Japan’s Knowns and Unknowns

Japan can feel impossible to summarize—so this itinerary doesn’t try. Instead, it moves with intention: four nights to decode Tokyo’s energy, a restorative interlude in Kanazawa, four nights in Kyoto for temples and rituals, then one final night back in Tokyo to end on a delicious high. It’s cultural depth with a calm, private pace—especially suited to families who want immersion without the overwhelm.

Where modern life, timeless tradition, and great taste meet
Tokyo — The City’s Spiritual Corners and After-Dark Flavor (4 nights)

Arrive in Tokyo with a private driver ready to smooth every transition and a stay at The Palace Hotel Tokyo, set beside the Imperial Palace gardens—an ideal base for a first, unhurried landing.
With an expert local guide, explore the western neighborhoods where Tokyo’s contrasts shine: the calm woodland paths of Meiji Jingu, the playful street culture of Harajuku, and the design-forward avenues of Omotesando. Then lean into the neon pulse of Shibuya and Shinjuku, balancing big moments with well-timed pauses.
Food becomes part of the story early: start at Tsukiji Outer Market, tasting your way through stalls before a hands-on lunch guided by a sushi chef. Later, follow the Sumida River into Asakusa for the traditional shops of Nakamise and the crimson presence of Sensoji.
For rare access, step inside a sumo stable to watch morning training up close—then, in the evening, head to Ebisu for an izakaya trio that shows how Tokyo truly eats: yakitori, sashimi, noodles, and a perfectly chosen pour.
Kanazawa — Gardens, Gold Leaf, and Ryokan Calm (1 night)

On Day 5, take the train to Kanazawa, once home to the Maeda Clan and still one of Japan’s most refined cultural pockets. Spend the day in the quiet elegance of Kenroku-en, then add texture with gold leaf workshops and a walk through Nagamachi, the old samurai district.
That evening is for restoration at Beniya Mukayu—a beautifully considered ryokan where private outdoor spring baths and hillside views set the tone. Dinner is served as kaiseki: precise, seasonal, and deeply satisfying.
Kyoto — Temples, Tea, and a Taste of Osaka (4 nights)

Arrive in Kyoto and begin with the dramatic vantage points of Kiyomizu temple, then descend into the atmosphere of Sannen-zaka and the stone-paved lanes near Yasaka-jinja. Your home for the next four nights is The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, tucked into the city’s elegant heart.
Kyoto’s classics are woven in with care: the shimmer of the Golden Pavilion, the still geometry of Ryoan-ji’s Zen gardens, and the green hush of Arashiyama bamboo groves. One highlight is a tea ceremony inside a 100-year-old Japanese teahouse, where you’ll learn the etiquette and technique behind every gesture—then sip matcha with a new appreciation for the ritual.
You’ll also have time to roam between Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, and the iconic torii “tunnels” of Fushimi Inari. And when evening calls for something different, slip over to Osaka with your guide for its character-filled food scene—think tucked-away hangouts, lively markets in Tenma, and the bar energy of Namba.
For a final countryside contrast, journey into the Takashima area: an easy, scenic cycle along Lake Biwa, with white sand beaches and pine-lined stretches leading to a mountain village farm. Between rice terraces and panoramic views, you’ll help prepare—and then enjoy—a multi-course lunch made from the freshest local ingredients.

Return to Tokyo for one last night at Aman Tokyo, perched in the Otemachi Tower with subtle ryokan-inspired details. As dusk settles, head out for a final evening dedicated to one thing done exceptionally well: ramen. Follow a curated route across neighborhoods, tasting award-winning bowls and closing the trip with warmth, flavor, and a sense of completion.
